("Let's Pretend")

Get Real

Life is hard, but there is so much to enjoy. Our children prove this as they spend much of their day imagining they are on a vacation or at the hospital or in a castle. They love acting out the Nutcracker, like Sarah, our "Clara," in this photo. By adding imagination to the same old costumes, play structure, and toys, they invent new scenario after new scenario...or just relish a few old ones.

This year, again we have seen much hardship with health problems in close friends and relatives, including the passing of two dear grandparents and Liz's aunt. No magic potion or Fairy Godmother has wisked away their problems. But these same people, in their stoicism, their love, and their faith, and their perspective, help us to appreciate and enjoy the circumstances and blessings we have.

We want to pay tribute to you who are making it through challenges. The titles we've chosen for our newsletter this year come from an old radio series called, "Let's Pretend." As a child, I would visit my Uncle Fred and Aunt Judy's house and listen to reel after reel of these fairy tales while falling asleep at night. Over the last year, because Uncle Fred and Aunt Judy taped copies for us, our children have delightfully done the same. And since Fred and Judy have endured much this year, we couldn't think of a better theme to choose to remember this year and honor them...and you.

"So off we go!..1...2...3!"

P.S. An advance apology for the length of this newsletter: I wrote a lot. I saved up my thoughts from the whole year, but hey! Now my writer's cramp is finally relieved!
